NIGHT DEMON Announce Another North American DIY Tour

night-demon-cover-final-1500px

Kosher Metal favorites, NIGHT DEMON, will hit the road this weekend through mid summer on a DIY tour of North America. The band released their debut album, Curse Of The Damned in January of this year and just completed a full European tour. They also just released their new single, “Satan” – you can check out the epic track here.

Lead singer/bassist Jarvis Leatherby had this to say about the upcoming tour (which he booked himself):

“Right on the heels of our ten week European tour, we are ready to hit the states in support of our new album Curse of the Damned. We will be performing shows all across this great land of ours in the following two and a half months, with support from the greatest local heavy metal bands in their respected areas. Much of this was booked on a DIY level, with extreme concentration on playing the right shows with the right promoters. Most of these will be headlining shows featuring the most comprehensive Night Demon setlist to date. We are primed and ready to fly the flag high for American heavy metal!”

MADROST Team Up With SOFA KING VINYL For Record Release Project

Sofa King Vinyl have announced that they have teamed up with Southern California’s Madrost (pronounced “muh-drawst”) for their first vinyl release project as part of the label’s launch. What this means is Sofa King Vinyl will be launching a pre-order campaign with exclusive bundles via Kickstarter. If the goal is met, Sofa King Vinyl will press 500 copies of Madrost’s critically-acclaimed album ‘Into The Aquatic Sector’ on 140 gram audiophile quality vinyl. If Sofa King Vinyl doesn’t hit the goal then nobody pays a dime and the records don’t get pressed while they basically kick rocks.

Regarding questions about the use of Kickstarter to sell records, the label states the following:

Since we are literally starting from nothing, we need to make sure we at least break even on the first few records we put out. Crowdfunding by pre-order is the perfect way to make sure we sell enough records and verify there is enough demand for a specific vinyl release. We don’t want to go seeking investors and having to take on “shareholders” because that just complicates things and gives other people a reason to think they can tell us what to do. We are lucky enough to be able to work with artists who understand our position and are excited to be a part of our label launch; and we are just as excited to work with them.

PRE-ORDER Now via Kickstarter here – Exclusive Bundles Available!

Release details:

  • 140g black audiophile quality vinyl
  • Mastered for vinyl from original 24-bit hi-res mixes
  • Poly-lined inner sleeve
  • Projected release date if Kickstarter goal is reached – August 24th, 2015

We Are Featured In This Week’s VC Reporter

The nice folks at VC Reporter did a killer write up on us and founder Max ‘ManJewky’ Wallis in their January 8th edition.  If you are local to Ventura County, California you can probably find a copy pretty easily. If not, see below for the digital version.

manjewkytoilet

“Metal music rose to prominence in the 1980s only to be eclipsed by Nirvana and the Seattle sound . . . or so the legend goes. The music fell out of the spotlight for years, with bands like Metallica representing close to the entirety of a culture to fans who didn’t know any better. But metal never died; it retreated underground where it spawned an infinite variety of subgenres, fusing influences from all across the musical spectrum into its core sound. Subgenres such as metalcore and deathcore developed from a strong hardcore punk influence to substantial success. Post-metal cast aside a verse-chorus-verse song format in favor of Black Sabbath-like riffing and cinematic atmosphere. All of these sounds had their moments before slowly going back underground. What has emerged since is a return to the core sound, a new wave of thrash and traditional metal. Internet radio station Kosher Metal wants to welcome you to the revolution.”

NEW YEAR’S METALUTION – January 10th, 2015 @ The Tavern in Ventura

NYM copy

We are pleased to announce another Kosher Metal hosted event!

Our next event will be called New Year’s Metalution and will be held on January 10th, 2015 at The Tavern in Ventura, California. We loved that place so much, we just had to come back and bring a handful of kick ass Metal bands with us.

Bands scheduled to perform are: Ruthless, Heretic, Six Pack Of Doom, and Raiju

21 & OVER – NO COVER – FREE PARKING

For those who are unfamiliar with The Tavern, it’s an old Victorian style house converted into a bar / nightclub in Downtown Ventura, CA. Supposedly, it’s haunted (if you believe in that sort of thing) – you can read up on the legend behind that here.

We look forward to seeing some familiar faces, and a bunch of new ones. You can RSVP to the Facebook event here.

Science, Bitch: Your MP3 Collection Contains Only 9% Of The Original Music Data

A recent article posted by Mic.com has revealed something irrefutable (backed with science data) that might change the way you choose to listen to music, especially if you use Spotify. To put it simply, when original music data (the “master”) is compressed to the digital MP3 format it loses 91% of its original data, which gets replaced with algorithms. That’s right 91 PERCENT! What does this mean, exactly? Well…it means a few things. First off, you are guaranteed to have minimal emotional response to the music because listening to music in MP3 format can “fatigue” the ears. Secondly, you are not hearing the music the way the artist intended you to hear it. Hearing the music in a higher fidelity can potentially evoke emotional responses never present when listening to it in the compressed MP3 form. Consider a vinyl record to be the equivalent of 1080p HD and a CD is 720P HD….now consider an MP3 to be only 9% of that 1080p HD. Just let that sink in for a bit.

Now, read this excerpt from the article:

Bob Ludwig, a record mastering engineer, believes this [music in MP3 form] is one of the chief reasons people don’t engage with albums as deeply anymore. “When you’re through listening to a whole album of this highly compressed music, your ear is fatigued,” he told NPR. “You may have enjoyed the music but you don’t really feel like going back and listening to it again.”

Research shows that musical quality has a huge effect on emotional response. A recent study performed by audio researchers at DTS divided a group of listeners into two groups — one that watched a video accompanied by standard stereo 96-kbps sound (Spotify’s default audio setting) and the other group listened in 256-kbps audio format. The responses in the brains of the group listening with the 256-kbps audio were 14% more powerful on metrics measuring memory creation and 66% higher on pleasure responses. And this was just 96 to 256 kbps.

Vinyl records are estimated to play at a whopping 1000 kbps. Music might not just have lost its revenue when it switched to digital; it may have lost its emotional power too.

Granted, we here at Kosher Metal have to use MP3 files to broadcast our radio station….but in no way should our radio station be the only way you listen to music. Sure, it’s a 128kbps which is higher than Spotify’s default setting but we want you to seek out the music from the bands you like hearing in physical form…whether it’s CD or vinyl.

RECAP: Night Of The Living Thrash

NOLT_tavernsign

This past Saturday, we hosted an event called Night Of The Living Thrash at The Tavern in Ventura, California. We were hoping to get someone out to review the show but we couldn’t make it happen due to scheduling conflicts, so… we’re doing it ourselves.

The evening started off with a thrashy kick to the balls when Social Overload began their set at 9:30pm – they have a good reputation amongst the locals and everyone we had talked to who were aware of them had nothing but good things to say. However, this was our first time catching these guys live and they pretty much set the tone for the rest of the night. If you haven’t checked these guys out and their shows are accessible for you…we highly recommend going. You can visit their website heavymetalhammer.com for show info, etc.

After giving away our first round of CD prize packs (courtesy of Nuclear Blast America) it was time for M.A.S. to tear it up. These guys got the pit going and provided an onslaught of thrashy riffs and vocals. They closed their set with a cover of Body Count’s “Cop Killer” and it was also around this time that we noticed some confused faces on some people who were walking through the venue to get to the outside area. Apparently there was an “SB ’04 Reunion” party in the back, we had no clue this was going to be occurring but it definitely provided for some laughs. There were sights of preppies and hoochies throughout the night with looks of disgust, most of them had to walk through a mosh pit to get outside where their party was, many of them plugging their ears. It was great! I mean, Metal is supposed to piss some people off…right?

After another round of giveaways, Brain Dead began to tear everyone a new third eye. With the twin-duo Adam ‘n Rez on guitar and bass along with blistering vocals by frontman Joey Dalo, these guys really brought the pit to life. Brain Dead has been hailed as one of the best local Thrash bands currently on the Los Angeles scene by established promoters, and we see nothing but great things for these guys in the future. Great songs and great stage presence. Hell, their debut album Indoctrinator was produced by former Slayer producer Bill Metoyer (you can get that here, if you’d like).

The final band of the night was Sangre and these Inland Empire heavy hitters brought that Metal hammer down in a way that could only result in one thing…a giant pit! Well, giant for the size of the venue anyway.  We couldn’t believe how insane both their set and the crowd were. We’ve already gotten requests to bring Sangre back, and we definitely will!

The best part about the whole night is that people moshed non-violently, if that makes any sense. When someone went down, they were helped back up….the way it’s supposed to be. No fights and no injuries that we are aware of. We have to give it up to the crowd, it was the epitome of how a crowd should behave at a Metal show. So, if you were there then pat yourself on the back.

The next event we have planned is on January 10th, 2015 at The Tavern once again and it will be called New Year’s Metalution. The night will feature Raiju, Six Pack Of Doom, Heretic, and Ruthless. We hope to see some familiar faces.
